Since 2004 Gary Western, better known as Antipode, has been developing his skills in electronica using only sequencers and audio editing software. Based in Marina CA, he works slowly on an irregular basis. He took piano courses at a very young age and played in band for several years.  He now attends CSU Monterey Bay where he studies electronic music.
His style is somewhat unique, and he often tries to combine more than one opposing style into each song (hence the name).
On this site you'll find updated information about when to expect new music, possible previews and of course the music itself. Give a listen and send email to antipodemusic@gmail.com if you have any comments or questions.

A site restructure is coming soon, which will make navigation, downloading, and reading current album progress much easier.  Stay tuned.

NEWS

  • (5/8) A minor progress update - I now have ten tracks completed, the most recent being Superscape itself - the title track and explosive closer for the album.  It starts out slow and somewhat reminiscent of my old track Spirit Walk before breaking into some good old-fashioned drum and bass.  Probably my best effort in that genre.  In other news, I've gotten ahold of the very excellent (and very free) synth VST "Helix", which I'm enjoying immensely, and I'm now partway through an eleventh track called Boxcar (which uses Helix for several instruments).  I've also retooled a large drum solo in Lightfighter to make it sound groovier and more natural.  More as it happens!
  • (3/29) Superscape is coming along nicely.  There are now nine completed tracks for the album, and I am midway through a tenth!  This means that the album is well on its way to meeting my deadline of June '08.  I've put together the second preview set for Superscape and have put it up in the music section.  This set features new portions of tracks previewed in the other set (which is still available), so this should be entirely new material for most of you.  In addition to those five, there are also portions of three all-new tracks, making eight total.  The order for this set is Hothead, Fields of Black, Transparent (a complete remake/retooling of my very first song, Opaque), Arboria, Lightfighter (a retro disco kind of feel with a nice groove), The Witching Hour, In the Mist, and Oil and Mud (a lengthy, atmospheric funk track).  I have also decided to finally re-enter the OVGMC competition and am now working on a song called Tricksy (which may or may not wind up on the album as well).  Anyway, enjoy the new preview set!  Much more is to come.
  • (1/18) I decided that though the site upgrade is still far from being finished, there's no reason to hold off on the progress reports.  Some big news - I'm formally announcing my second album, currently in progress, entitled "Superscape".  So far Superscape is sounding far better than any work I did on Antechamber and is still on track for a release sometime around June of this year.  In addition to the three tracks mentioned below I have now finished two more, entitled "In the Mist" and "Arboria".  In the Mist starts with a slow jazz, soul groove and turns into a full-fledged, complicated piece in the middle.  Arboria is very reminiscent of Anthrax, an earlier single I've done, in that it combines soft flowing pads with sharp and irregular drums.  This makes five tracks complete, and two more are in progress.  Perhaps most importantly, I've compiled the first Superscape Preview Set, just as I had done previously with Antechamber.  This preview set contains pieces of all five completed tracks and can be found in the music section!
  • (11/5) It's been awhile!  Sorry I've been starving this site of updates, but I've had a lot going on.  The aforementioned move was successful, so I'm finally back on track with music.  All three of those tracks I had planned for my second album are now finished, which means I've finally gotten back up to speed.  These are titled "Hothead", "Fields of Black", and "The Witching Hour", and I believe them to be the best music I've made to date.  Two more tracks are currently in progress.  In addition, some fantastic news for me - I managed to win the first round of the OVGMC competition I mentioned below with Hothead as my entry!  This gave me the right to choose the theme for the following month, which I decided would be "a nighttime village".  Just last night I entered "The Witching Hour" for this contest.  To top it all off, I've posted Hothead in the music section!  Download and enjoy - it will be my only music release for some time.  The next update will be a ways off, so hang tight for more new info.  One more thing - that big site update I keep referencing is now slated for release in early January 2008!
  • (8/26) Visitor Herograw has generously offered a new mirror (which undoubtedly will be much more reliable than what I've offered for Antechamber)!  All music will soon be available there.  You can check out this new database by clicking the new link in the music section.
  • (8/23) I've finally gotten together a Paypal donation account (see above) - so for those who really enjoy my music, feel free to become one of my best friends! The site restructure is still on its way, but it will still be some time. Three new tracks, all for my second album (still on track for release in early to mid-2008) are in progress (more details will come with the site upgrade). One of these will become publicly available with the closure of the new entry in the OVGMC competition (for which I made Ice Forest back in 2005). An upcoming move is going to prevent me from updating/working for awhile, so hang tight! I'll be back.
  • (7/9) Check the Antechamber page - I've put up a picture of the finished CD package for those that are interested. Remember, email me if you're interested in one.
  • (7/7) For those that haven't been able to download the album through FileHO, I've added another mirror, MegaUpload, which should work much better. Go to the Antechamber page to get it.
  • (6/30) The album is finally out! Thanks to everyone who commented to me on the progress, thanks to my family and friends, and thanks to yourself for reading the site. Please download the album, give it a listen, and tell me what you think.
  • (6/20) Track 8, Interstice, has been finished, completing the album. In this final week leading up to the release, I'll be working on tightening up little details. Also, the final tracklist has been added below with minor order changes.
  • (6/19) Antechamber release date set to be June 30th!! Be there or be square. Also, Track 10, now officially titled Circuit Breaker, has been completed. This finishes 11 of 12 tracks (yes, I've decided to keep it to 12, but the remaining track will instead be a short ambient piece).
  • (6/2) Antechamber Preview Set is now on Myspace, and is still available in the download archive. Considering rejection of a track and leaving the album at 11 total.
  • (5/12) Album restructure finished. Track 8, now titled Atlantis Groove, has been completed. This completes 10 of 12 tracks. I've also put together a new preview set, featuring all of the current tracks in the new order! Get it from either the music archive or the top of the page.
  • (5/1) Minor edits to most tracks - descriptions updated and reordered. New album structure information can be found at the top of the tracklist below.
  • (4/27) Album restructure; work beginning on both the new Track 7 and a new retooling of Fulcrum.
  • (4/15) Work finished on Track 12, titled Exeunt. This completes 9 of 12 tracks.
  • (3/27) Music archive now available! Please check out any music I've got there - I might add bonus downloads or preview tracks there from time to time, so keep your eyes peeled.
  • (3/24) Work finished on Track 6, now titled Aurora! This completes 8 of 12 tracks.
  • (3/3) Work started on Track 6 of Antechamber (read below)

MUSIC

To download any music that I've publicly released (including old singles), please go to the Music page, or see a listing below of each completed album (with links to each respective release page).

Antechamber is my debut album. It features 12 tracks with various styles, ranging from ambience, rock, drum and bass, and orchestral. Most of the time, more than one of these is featured in each track. Visit the Music page for more information, or go directly to the Antechamber release page. Remember, if you'd like more of my music, check out some of my old tunes on the download page.

  • (Release Pending) SUPERSCAPE
Superscape is my forthcoming second album.  It is currently slated for a June 2008 release.  It features more interesting style mashups, catchy beats and deep, atmospheric chords.  A preview set featuring five of the currently completed tracks can be found in the Music page.  The dedicated Superscape page is forthcoming and will be released with the in-progress site upgrade.

Thanks for visiting the site - I'll keep it updated with news and more downloads, so come back soon.
